A seven-minute short film called Paperman precedes the film Wreck-It Ralph. It is a black and white romantic comedy animated short film set in New York during the 1940s with no dialogue. There is a small amount of red shown throughout the film that comes from the lipsticked-kiss appearing on a sheet of white paper. In the film, a man is standing on the platform at a train station when he meets an attractive girl with whom he instantly falls in love. He carries a pile of white paper documents with him when one sheet blows onto the woman’s face, leaving behind her red lipstick mark on the paper. The rest of the film depicts the man’s efforts to attract the woman’s attention when he sees her through the window in the building opposite him. He begins folding paper planes and tossing them out of his office window towards her. The way they meet again is sheer magic and fate as the paper plane with the red lipstick mark plays a part in bringing them together.

Paperman received an Academy Award win for Best Short Animated Film (John Kahrs) and an Annie Award (the animation industry’s highest honour) win for Best Animated Short Subject.
